How to determine link length for custom suspension or steering links

How to determine link length for custom suspension or steering links

If you're ready to order custom 7075 links and need help determining what length you need then this guide is for you. Keep in mind that your link length is determined by what size rod ends/heim joints you'll be using. It's important to note that the calculations we provide are for the rod ends we sell, the calculation will be different if you're using tie-rod ends, or specialty rod ends.

Step 1: Determine your eye-to-eye length

If you're replacing an existing link then this measurement is pretty straight forward. If you're building a custom suspension setup you'll need your mounting tabs mocked up on your project so you can get the eye to eye measurement.

Step 2: Subtract Rod End/Heim length from eye-to-eye measurement using chart below.

Use the chart below to find the rod end size you're using and subtract that number from your eye to eye measurement to get the link body length*

Rod End Shank Diameter Amount to subtract
1/2" 2.5"
5/8" 2.75"
3/4" 3"
7/8" 3.5"
1" 4.5"
1-1/4" 4.5"

We determine this by calculating how much each rod end will add to the overall length after max thread engagement has been reached. It's important to note that this guide is based on the rod ends we sell, the calculation is only accurate for rod ends with similar specifications.

*Calculation is based on the link having two identical rod end/heim joints at each end

Eye-to-eye measurement - Heim Length from chart = Link length
